Human Chain, Protest and Blockade Held in Khulna Over Brutal Killing of Md. Ajmul Hossain

Students of North Western University staged a human chain, protest rally and blockade at Sonadanga intersection in Khulna to protest the killing of their fellow student, Md. Azmul Hossain. Students from various public and private educational institutions in Khulna also joined the program in solidarity.

As no accused had been arrested even after a murder case was filed, agitated students blocked the Sonadanga Bus Stand intersection. The students later withdrew their protest following assurances from the administration and political representatives.

On Monday (September 21), the Sonadanga Bus Stand intersection remained crowded with protesting Northwestern University students from 11:00 a.m. The students expressed their outrage over the brutal killing of their fellow student Ajmul and chanted various slogans in protest.

At one point during the demonstration, the students blocked the important Sonadanga Bus Stand intersection in the city. As all connecting roads were closed, severe traffic congestion developed in the area. The protest continued until around 1:00 p.m. The students later suspended the blockade and returned to the university campus following assurances from the administration.

The students said that if the accused were not arrested within the next 24 hours, they would return with stricter protest programs. They also demanded that a charge sheet be submitted within 30 days. They warned that if their demands were not met, they would stage demonstrations surrounding the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) headquarters and the police station.

Meanwhile, Northwestern University's Acting Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, deans, Proctor, assistant proctors, heads of departments, faculty members, officers and employees joined the human chain in solidarity with the students. They called for justice in the killing and urged the students to return to classes, expressing confidence in the assurances given by the administration.

During the students' blockade, Khulna City Corporation Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju arrived at the scene and assured the students of action. He later visited the administrative building of Northwestern University, where he met with university authorities and the protesting students.

After lengthy discussions with the students, police officials said that all of their demands would be addressed. They said the accused would be arrested as soon as possible. Rezauar Rahman, Deputy Police Commissioner of KMP, also assured the protesting students regarding the matter.

Ajmul Hossain was beaten to death around midnight last Friday on the rooftop of a five-story building in Mosque Lane on Hall Road, adjacent to Khulna University, following an allegation of theft. Azmul was a first-year student of the Department of English Language and Literature at North Western University.

On Saturday, Ajmul's father filed a murder case at Harintana Police Station, naming four current and former students of Khulna University as accused. However, none of the accused had been arrested at the time of the report.

Meanwhile, the protesting students temporarily suspended their blockade and held an emergency press conference at the administrative building of Northwestern University. At the press conference, the students demanded that the accused be arrested within 24 hours and that a charge sheet be submitted within 30 days. They warned that failure to meet these demands would lead to stricter protest programs.
